The Grainfield City Library has been a consistent presence for many years, serving the community with the many advantages a library can provide. In the past year this small, hometown library has been given a new breath of life with the completion of a remodeling project. The first phase of improvements included roof repair, completed in April of 2019. The improvements continued with work being done to install new insulation in the ceiling, drywall throughout the building, new ceilings, flooring, ADA compliant bathroom, doors, windows, and a tankless water heater. An added feature is the kitchenette area. In November 2019 the process for moving everything from the library began. Taylor Construction completed the entire project and in May 2020.
As the library opened its doors once again, improvements continued through grants for the purchase of 2 new computers. Other new items include: a little kid’s computer, a color laser jet printer that is also a copier and scanner, a laptop, and a projector. The financing of the remodeling improvements were made possible with grant money provided thru the Dane G. Hansen Foundation. Becky Zerr was the librarian at the time the grant was awarded, many thanks to her for the work put towards the grant. Multiple other librarians have worked in the library throughout the years, as well as many volunteers. Grainfield has been blessed with numerous individuals who have helped keep the Library open and make it what it is today!
Currently Bonnie Wood works as the town Librarian. Last summer, Jailey Gallentine assisted Bonnie in working at the library. Together they were able to complete a full inventory of the items the library has available to loan and began acquiring new materials. A summer reading program was held at the City Park, with a great turn out. Future plans for the Library include updating the front of the building along with a new concrete ramp and an awning. Current hours of operation are 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm Monday through Thursday. Due to Covid restrictions a grand reopening has not yet been scheduled.
